About Mrs Saint Delafield

Mrs Saint Delafield is a script typeface written in a thin line with a steep rightward slant. Its capitals are several times taller than the small letters and open with long horizontal entry strokes and loops, while the tiny lowercase joins into a fast, signature-like line. The design comes from the Charles Bluemlein Script Collection. As the official description tells it, those scripts were made by gathering signatures and constructing whole alphabets out of them; because the results no longer resembled the originals, each received a fictitious name, and the styles were shown in Higgins Ink catalogues. Alejandro Paul and Sudtipos produced the digital version and kept the name Bluemlein had given it. The family is one Regular style with 238 glyphs for the basic Latin character set, published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Mrs Saint Delafield works

Signature lines
The alphabet was built from real signatures, so a name set in it reads as a signed sign-off under a letter or on a certificate.
Names on wedding stationery
Tall capitals with long entry strokes make the initials of two names the focus of an invitation or place card.
Wordmarks for boutiques and studios
A single capital followed by small joined letters forms a mark that resembles a founder's signature.
Short headings on beauty and fashion pages
One or two words in the thin, slanted line add a handwritten accent above plain text.

Things to know

Capitals cannot be set in a row
The specimen shows a line of capitals overlapping into a tangle. Each capital is meant to be followed by lowercase letters.
The lowercase is very small
Small letters are a fraction of the capital height and the line is thin, so the script needs large sizes to stay readable.
One style, basic Latin
Mrs Saint Delafield has a single Regular style and covers the basic Latin character set; the Latin Extended set is not complete.
