About Kufam

Kufam is a sans serif family that pairs Arabic and Latin for information design. Its Arabic, by Wael Morcos, looks back to Kufi inscriptions of the seventh century; the dark, condensed shapes of that script also informed the Latin lowercase by Artur Schmal, whose capitals come from the sign and shop lettering seen in Amsterdam in the early twentieth century. In the specimen the Latin has squared curves, a capital A with a rounded top and a leaning left stroke, and V and W drawn with one curved side. Kufam is a variable font with a weight axis from 400 to 900: six weights from Regular to Black, each with an italic, 12 styles. The fonts hold 2,271 glyphs for Arabic, Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Kufam works

Bilingual signage and wayfinding
Kufam was conceived for information design, with Arabic and Latin drawn to stand together on the same sign.
Arabic and English branding
One family in six weights covers a name, a tagline and small print in both scripts.
Transit and venue information
Weights from Regular to Black separate destinations, directions and secondary notes.
Posters and titles
ExtraBold and Black bring out the squared curves and the round-topped A at large sizes.
Interfaces in two scripts
Arabic, Latin Extended and Vietnamese character sets sit in the same files, so a product needs one typeface for several locales.
