About Jura

Jura is a sans serif whose curves are flattened into rounded rectangles, drawn with a thin, even line. Its designer, Daniel Johnson, writes that the idea came while he was drawing a Kayah Li range for the FreeFont project: the Latin alphabet reuses the strokes and curves of those glyphs. Cyrillic and Greek were added later, and the original Kayah Li glyphs remain in the font, though mainstream Burmese was never part of it. In the specimen the letters are wide and openly spaced, stroke ends are rounded, and the zero carries a centre dot. Jura is a variable font with a weight axis from 300 to 700 and five named weights, without italics, and holds 1,108 glyphs. The name table also credits Alexei Vanyashin and Mirko Velimirovic, and the catalogue lists Cyreal alongside Johnson.

Where Jura works

Science-fiction and technology titles
Rounded-square bowls and a thin, even line give headings an engineered look suited to games, gadgets and space themes.
Instrument panels and HUD-style interfaces
A dotted zero and wide, open letters keep readouts and short labels distinct on dark screens.
Light display text
Light 300 at large sizes draws a fine outline-like word, and the axis can be raised to Bold 700 where more presence is needed.
Headings in Greek and Cyrillic
Both scripts follow the same squared construction as the Latin, so a multilingual product keeps one look.
Kayah Li text
The Kayah Li glyphs from which the design began are still in the font, a script few families include.

Fonts that pair with Jura

Alice Serif

Jura is sans serif and Alice is serif (1 weight): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Arvo Slab Serif

Jura is sans serif and Arvo is slab serif (2 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Courier Prime Monospace

Courier Prime is a monospace family (2 weights) for code and figures next to Jura as the text face.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
