About GFS Didot

GFS Didot is a serif typeface for Greek with a companion Latin alphabet. Its Greek goes back to a type that the French typecutter Firmin Didot designed in Paris in 1805, which Adamantios Korais adopted for his publishing programme and which reached Greece in 1821 with a field press brought by Didot's grandson. According to the official notes, that type served as the base for GFS Didot in 1994: Takis Katsoulidis designed it and George Matthiopoulos digitised it for the Greek Font Society. The Latin shown in the specimen has clear thick-and-thin contrast, bracketed serifs and ball terminals on letters such as a, c and r. The family is one Regular style with 1,107 glyphs, covering Greek, Greek Extended, Latin and Vietnamese character sets. There is no bold or italic in the package. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where GFS Didot works

Greek-language books
The Greek follows the Didot type that, according to the official notes, was the usual choice for Greek publications until the late twentieth century.
Editions of ancient and scholarly Greek
The Greek Extended character set supplies the accented and aspirated letters that such texts need.
Greek and English side by side
A Latin alphabet designed to accompany the Greek keeps both languages in one typeface on a bilingual page.
Titles and headings
Thin hairlines against heavier stems show clearly when a title is set large.
