About Cantata One

Cantata One is a serif typeface in the Didone manner: thick vertical stems, thin hairlines and flat, fine serifs. Its letters are wide, and in the specimen the a, c, f, r and y finish in round ball terminals, while the heavy stems give the single Regular weight a dark presence closer to a semibold. According to the official description, the idea came from pointed-pen lettering on an antique hand-drawn New York City map, and the face is aimed at medium and large text as well as display sizes, where its contrast is meant to suggest luxury. Joana Correia designed it, and the copyright notice names Sorkin Type Co. The font has 412 glyphs for Latin and Latin Extended and one style; there is no italic and no second weight. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Cantata One works

Magazine headlines
Thick stems against hairlines give large titles the high-contrast look of fashion and culture mastheads.
Labels for premium goods
The official notes say the face is meant to evoke luxury at display sizes, which fits wine, cosmetics and chocolate labels.
Titles on invitations and programmes
Wide letters with ball terminals carry event names and headings set in one size.
Short introductions
Standfirsts and intro paragraphs at medium sizes stay within the range the design was made for.
