About Calistoga

Calistoga is a display typeface with heavy, slightly condensed serif letters and a cheerful vintage character. Its model was the poster lettering Oscar M. Bryn made for the Santa Fe Railroad in the western United States. In the specimen the serifs are short and bracketed, the bowls are full, the g is double-storey with a prominent ear, and letters sit close together so that a headline takes little width. The font has a single Regular style, drawn dark, and a set of 1,013 glyphs: proportional and tabular figures in old-style and lining forms, fractions, superiors and inferiors, many symbols and case-sensitive forms, along with the Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese character sets. Yvonne Schüttler designed the original; the official notes add that Eben Sorkin widened its language coverage and reworked details in 2018 and again in 2022. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Calistoga works

Travel and event posters
The railroad-poster ancestry and the narrow, dark letters fit a destination name or date into a tight column.
Food and drink packaging
Fractions and four kinds of figures set weights, volumes and prices in the same face as the product name.
Menus and price lists
Tabular figures align prices in columns, while old-style figures sit inside descriptive lines.
Site and blog headings
A single dark weight gives headings contrast against a lighter text family underneath.
Titles in Vietnamese
The Vietnamese character set carries the stacked accents that display fonts often leave out.
