Star-Lite: A 27 ft 6 in Cruising Sailboat That Sleeps Four

William D. Jackson's Star-Lite sleeps four in 6 ft 4 in bunks, with a head, galley and small auxiliary engine.

Star-Lite is the boat in this collection that most invites you to stay aboard. William D. Jackson drew it at 27 ft 6 in (8.4 m), with four bunks of 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m), a head and a galley. A small auxiliary engine of up to 100 cu. in. backs up the sails. The design is a refinement of an earlier ship called Tabu, improved on the experience of that first build. It suits ambitious builders ready for a real cruising project.

Living aboard

Bunks of 6 ft 4 in (1.93 m) mean tall sailors can stretch out, and a proper head and galley turn weekends into real voyages. Sleeping four makes it practical for families or friends. Because it was improved from the first boat built, Tabu, the plan reflects lessons learned in practice. Fourteen sheets cover the hull, accommodation and rig.

Who designed it

William D. Jackson drew Star-Lite, which appeared on page 104 of its original printing as Craft Print 188. It is an improved version of his first-built design, Tabu. It is a plan built on real-world experience.

Before you build

  • Ventilate the cabin, galley and engine space well to keep air fresh and condensation down.
  • Keep the auxiliary engine within the 100 cu. in. limit the plan sets.
  • Plan the build in stages, as a 27 ft 6 in cruiser takes considerable time and workshop space.
