About Yatra One

Yatra One is a display typeface that covers the Devanagari and Latin scripts in one heavy weight. Its starting point is the brush-painted signage of Mumbai's local railway: strokes swell and thin as a flat brush would move, terminals end in angular cuts, and the knots of the Devanagari letters are left open. The Latin letters are drawn with the brush angle of the Devanagari, so capitals such as A and Y lean and taper, and the lowercase z in the specimen takes a form close to the numeral 3. The family has one Regular style and is not a variable font. Its 1,007 glyphs cover Devanagari, Latin and Latin Extended, and the official notes mention basic alternates for Marathi. Catherine Leigh Schmidt leads the project, and the font is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Yatra One works

Signs in two scripts
Devanagari and Latin share one brush angle and one weight, so a sign that carries both scripts reads as a single piece of lettering.
Poster and event titles
The heavy weight and strong stroke contrast hold a short title at large sizes without a second font.
Shop fronts and menu headings
Angular brush cuts bring the look of painted lettering to shop names, menu sections and labels.
Captions that mix scripts
Because both scripts live in one file with 1,007 glyphs, a caption can switch between Devanagari and Latin words and keep one texture.

Fonts that pair with Yatra One

Hind Sans Serif

Yatra One sets the title in a heavy brush style; Hind covers the same Devanagari and Latin scripts in a range from Light to Bold for the text below.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

One heavy style
Yatra One has a single Regular file, and that Regular is already drawn heavy. There is no lighter cut, bold or italic.
The Latin follows the Devanagari brush
Latin letters take their stroke angle from the Devanagari, which produces unusual shapes such as a z that resembles a 3.
Three character sets
The font contains Devanagari, Latin and Latin Extended. Cyrillic and Greek are not included.
