About Xanh Mono

Xanh Mono is a monospaced typeface with serifs, an unusual combination its designers call a mono-serif. Every character sits on the same width, yet the drawing is that of a narrow, high-contrast text face: heavy vertical stems, hairline serifs and crossbars, and round ball terminals on a, c, f, j and r. Wide letters such as m and w are compressed to fit the cell, while i, j and l grow long slab feet to fill it. The designers, Lam Bao and Duy Dao of Yellow Type Foundry, explain that 'xanh' in Vietnamese can mean blue, green or young, and they intend the face for both reading and display. The family has one weight in Regular and Italic. It holds 497 glyphs for Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese, and is not a variable font.

Where Xanh Mono works

Editorial headlines in fixed width
Hairline serifs and ball terminals give a monospaced title the contrast of a magazine display face.
Vietnamese typography
The font was made by Vietnamese designers and includes the full set of stacked Vietnamese accents.
Poetry, captions and colophons
Fixed-width setting gives short texts a typewritten structure with a more refined letter.
Posters and zines
Large sizes show the contrast between thick stems and thin serifs, and the even grid of characters.
Tabular layouts with character
Columns of names and numbers align by construction, since every glyph has the same width.
