About Volkhov

Volkhov is a serif family with thick, even strokes and a sturdy build intended for reading. The official notes list the features that serve that aim: large open counters, rather short descenders and blunt asymmetric serifs. The specimen bears this out, with a tall lowercase, wide round letters and wedge-shaped serifs that differ from left to right. There are four styles: Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic. The notes add that spacing in the Bold is slightly looser than in the Regular, because the extra weight was grown mostly inwards, and that the Italic is steeply inclined and calligraphic in character. Google Fonts and the license credit Cyreal, while the notes name Ivan Petrov as designer. The 221 glyphs stay within the Latin subset, covering Western European languages; French lacks only the rare capital Ÿ.

Where Volkhov works

Body text on screens
Low contrast and large open counters keep letters clear at reading sizes.
Compact editorial layouts
Short descenders allow tighter line spacing, which the notes describe as economic for complex text settings.
Headlines over the same text face
Bold, with its looser spacing, sets titles without bringing in a second family.
Quotations and emphasis
The steep, calligraphic Italic contrasts clearly with the sober Regular inside a paragraph.
