About Suez One

Suez One is a display serif with dense, dark letterforms. In the Latin, short wedge-shaped serifs grow out of thick stems, curves carry a slanted stress as if made with a broad pen, and joins are cut at an angle, which leaves small, sharp counters. Numerals are old-style, with 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 dropping below the baseline. The Hebrew alphabet is an original design that, according to the official description, takes its cue from Hebrew calligraphy; the whole typeface is meant for headline and display work. The family consists of one Regular font and is not a variable font; despite the Regular name, the design is as dark as a bold. Its 460 glyphs cover Hebrew, Latin and Latin Extended. Michal Sahar, who works in Tel Aviv, leads the project, and the font is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Suez One works

Hebrew and Latin headlines
Both alphabets come in the same dark weight, so a bilingual front page or poster keeps one tone.
Mastheads and book covers
Wedge serifs and angled joins give a title a carved, emphatic outline at large sizes.
Pull quotes
A short quotation in Suez One stands apart from lighter body text without the help of colour.
Signs and menu headings
Thick stems stay visible from a distance on signage and at the top of a menu.

Heebo Sans Serif

Suez One sets Hebrew and Latin headlines in one heavy serif style; Heebo, a sans serif covering the same two scripts from Thin 100 to Black 900, handles the text beneath.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
