About Sorts Mill Goudy

Sorts Mill Goudy is an old-style serif with moderate contrast, a slanted stress in the round letters and softly bracketed serifs. The specimen shows a small lowercase beside generous capitals, a Q whose tail sweeps under the following letter, and numerals that rise and fall like lowercase letters. The official source describes the family as a revival of an old-style typeface by Frederic Goudy, extended to cover more of the Latin alphabet. It comes as two static files, Regular and Italic, both at weight 400; there is no bold and no variable version. The 626 glyphs cover Latin and Latin Extended, including letters for languages such as Polish, Czech, Hungarian and Turkish. The copyright notice names Barry Schwartz, and the fonts are published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Sorts Mill Goudy works

Book pages and long essays in print
A roman with a true italic covers text and emphasis, and old-style figures blend into running sentences.
Invitations, menus and programmes
The sweeping Q, soft serifs and small lowercase give short formal texts a traditional printed look.
Epigraphs and quotations
The Italic file sets a quotation or dedication apart from the roman text around it.
Literary and historical titles
As a revival of a Goudy design, the face fits covers and headings that refer to earlier book printing.
