About Signika Negative

Signika Negative is a sans serif family and the companion of Signika, a typeface developed for wayfinding and signage. According to the official notes, this version is adjusted for layouts where positive and reversed text appear side by side, because letters set light on dark tend to look heavier. The design has low stroke contrast and a tall lowercase, with gently angled stroke ends, a tail on the l and a two-storey a, which keep words clear at small sizes and from a distance. The figures are drawn as tabular. Signika Negative is a variable font with one axis, weight, from 300 to 700, and five named weights: Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold. It has no italics. The font holds 1,416 glyphs across Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. Anna Giedryś is the designer.

Where Signika Negative works

Dark-mode interfaces
The cut is adjusted for light letters on dark surfaces, so navigation bars and panels match positive text set in Signika.
Reversed signage panels
White lettering on coloured wayfinding boards keeps the stroke weight intended by the design.
Mixed positive and negative layouts
Using Signika on light areas and Signika Negative on dark ones evens out the apparent weight across a page.
Timetables and price boards
Tabular figures hold columns of times and prices in line on dark displays.
Captions over images
A tall lowercase and low contrast keep short lines legible when set over photographs or video.
