About Rowdies

Rowdies is a Latin display typeface whose letters look hand-cut: in the specimen stems lean slightly off vertical, edges are chiselled at uneven angles, and the dots on i and j are diamonds. The official notes say the design takes its cue from the rough, tough world of Indian action cinema and was made for storytelling genres such as action, drama, adventure, thriller, noir and crime. The family has three weights, Light, Regular and Bold, supplied as static files; even Light is thick in the specimen, so the steps run from heavy to heavier. There is no italic, and Rowdies is not a variable font. Each font holds 635 glyphs across the Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese subsets. Jaikishan Patel is the designer, and the family is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Rowdies works

Film and series title cards
The design was made for action, thriller and crime stories, and its chiselled edges carry that tone in a title.
Event and gig posters
Bold 700 fills a poster headline with irregular, hand-cut shapes.
Thumbnails and social posts
Thick strokes in all three weights keep a few words solid over a video still.
Comic and game lettering
Diamond dots and uneven stems suit sound effects, chapter titles and menu headers.
