About Ropa Sans

Ropa Sans is a compact sans serif whose upright style looks back, from a distance, to the engineering lettering standards of the early twentieth century: in the specimen the curves are squared off, the sides of round letters run nearly straight, and the letters are narrow and closely fitted. The italic takes a different path. It is strongly humanist and cut with extreme ink traps, and according to the designer's notes drawing it forced a rework of almost all the early roman shapes. The open release is a subset of the commercial Ropa Sans Pro family and holds only the regular weight and its italic, with 349 glyphs covering Latin-based languages; Cyrillic and Greek belong to the commercial edition. Botjo Nikoltchev is the designer, spelled Botio in the font's name table, and the license reserves the name Ropa Sans.

Where Ropa Sans works

Technical and industrial branding
Squared curves and straight-sided rounds give product names and spec sheets an engineered tone.
Headlines in limited width
The narrow fit sets more characters per line than a normal-width sans at the same size.
Interface labels
Compact letters with a tall lowercase keep buttons and tabs short.
Captions and emphasis with character
The humanist italic, with its ink traps, stands out clearly from the upright when used for quotes or notes.

Things to know

Regular and Italic only
Ropa Sans has one weight in two styles. Bold has to be faked by software or taken from another family; it is not a variable font.
Latin only
The open fonts cover Latin and Latin Extended. The official notes place Cyrillic and Greek in the commercial Pro family.
Reserved font name
The license notice reserves the name Ropa Sans, so modified versions need a new name.
