About REM

REM is a sans serif family designed by Octavio Pardo for corporate and display use. Its strokes are heavy and low in contrast, and the outstrokes narrow slightly toward their ends, which the designer describes as the reverse of the usual approach. In the specimen the capitals are wide, the x-height is large and the tail of a tapers to a point. The family is variable on one axis, weight, from 100 to 900, with nine named weights in roman and italic, 18 styles. It comes as two variable files with 963 glyphs covering Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese character sets, and the description lists four figure sets, small caps and alternate glyphs. The name stands for Rapid Eye Movement: the designer says the idea came to him in a dream. The name table lists Ashler Design as manufacturer.

Where REM works

Corporate identities
The designer positions REM for corporate work, and nine weights with italics cover a logo line, headings and small print.
Headlines and display lines
Wide capitals and the tapering stroke ends show at large sizes in Bold to Black.
Tables, prices and reports
Four sets of figures let numbers be matched to running text or lined up in columns.
Interface titles with small caps
The built-in small caps set labels and abbreviations without scaling down capitals.
Vietnamese and Central European sites
The Latin Extended and Vietnamese sets cover languages such as Polish, Czech, Turkish and Vietnamese.

Fonts that pair with REM

Amiri Serif

REM is sans serif and Amiri is serif (2 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Besley Slab Serif

REM is sans serif and Besley is slab serif (6 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Cousine Monospace

Cousine is a monospace family (2 weights) for code and figures next to REM as the text face.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Use REM on the web

Download the family and host the files on your own site, then declare them in CSS. Please do not link to the files on trendhub.net: preview files here are subsets and their addresses change.

Things to know

Default weight is Medium
The weight axis defaults to 500, not 400, so choose Regular explicitly if that is the weight wanted.
Two variable files
Roman and italic are separate variable fonts, each spanning 100 to 900.
Figures and small caps are OpenType features
The extra figure sets, small caps and alternates are switched on through OpenType settings in the application or CSS.
