About Protest Strike

Protest Strike is a display typeface of thick, compact sans serif letters. It belongs to the Protest Types, which Octavio Pardo began as a personal study of the lettering on protest signs; the project spans four families, and Strike is described as the solid, peaceful one. In the specimen the letters are narrow and tightly fitted, counters are small, and stems end in slanted cuts, with a notch where the bowl of the P meets its stem. According to the project notes, Strike shares its spacing and kerning with Protest Guerrilla and Protest Riot, so a message can be switched between them without changing line lengths. The family has one style, named Regular although it is very dark, and is not a variable font. Its 587 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Protest Strike works

Placards and banners
The letterforms come from a study of protest signs: thick strokes and narrow widths fit a slogan onto a board.
Poster headlines
Tightly fitted heavy letters set a short line as one dark band across a poster.
Campaign graphics with changing tone
Because spacing and kerning match Protest Riot and Protest Guerrilla, a layout can swap voices without reflowing.
Event signage
Compact widths let a long word run large on a narrow sign or stage banner.
