About Pangolin

Pangolin is a handwriting typeface with upright, unconnected letters built like a sans serif. The strokes are thick and of one width, with rounded ends and a slightly wobbly edge, as if written with a marker, while the shapes themselves stay simple and wide. Kevin Burke designed it for Pangolin Love, the Google Doodle shown on Valentine's Day 2017; the name refers to the pangolin, an endangered animal found in Asia and Africa. The family is a single Regular style, with no bold or italic, and is not a variable font. Its 874 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended, Cyrillic, Cyrillic Extended and Vietnamese character sets, so the same hand can write English, Polish, Turkish and Vietnamese as well as Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian. The fonts are published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Pangolin works

Children's books and classroom sheets
Upright, separate letters with simple shapes are easy to recognise for readers who are still learning.
Comics and speech bubbles
Marker-like strokes of one thickness look hand-lettered inside a balloon or caption box.
Casual game and app text
The face was made for an interactive Doodle, and its thick strokes hold up in short on-screen messages.
Informal text in Cyrillic
Cyrillic and Cyrillic Extended are included, so a Russian, Ukrainian or Bulgarian version of a design can keep the same handwriting.
