About Palanquin

Palanquin is a sans serif text family in which Devanagari and Latin were drawn together instead of one being fitted to the other. The Devanagari is monolinear, and the Latin in the specimen is a humanist sans with open shapes, a moderate lowercase height and long, clean ascenders. The family has seven text weights, from Thin 100 to Bold 700, all upright; each is a static file with 1,226 glyphs covering Devanagari, Latin and Latin Extended. For darker settings the designer made a separate display family, Palanquin Dark, with details adjusted to the heavier colour; together the two are described as a superfamily. Pria Ravichandran, a type designer from India, leads the project and holds the copyright. The stated aim is a balance between typographic convention and a touch of liveliness.

Where Palanquin works

Text set in Devanagari and Latin
Both scripts were designed at the same time, so mixed paragraphs keep one texture.
Reading text on screens
Regular and Medium serve body copy, and the family is described by its designer as made for the digital age.
Light interface text
Thin, ExtraLight and Light give large numbers and titles a fine line, which few Devanagari families offer.
Headings with Palanquin Dark
The heavier sibling family takes over for display sizes while Palanquin sets the text beneath.

Fonts that pair with Palanquin

Almendra Serif

Palanquin is sans serif and Almendra is serif (2 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Bitter Slab Serif

Palanquin is sans serif and Bitter is slab serif (9 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Cousine Monospace

Cousine is a monospace family (2 weights) for code and figures next to Palanquin as the text face.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

No italics
Palanquin has seven upright weights. There is no italic, and it is not a variable font.
Nothing heavier than Bold
Styles above 700 are found in the separate Palanquin Dark family, not in Palanquin.
Seven separate files
Each weight is its own TTF, so a page should load only the weights it uses.
