About Nixie One

Nixie One is a display typeface built from a single thin line. Every stroke has the same hairline thickness, the serifs are flat slabs of that thickness too, and corners and stroke ends are rounded, as if the letters were bent from glass tubing. The skeleton underneath is that of a typewriter face: wide letters, a two-storey a, and slab feet on i, l and r. Jovanny Lemonad, the designer, calls it a cross between neon-tube signage and a typewriter, and compares the unexpected match to chicken cooked with pineapple. The family has only one style; although it is labelled Regular 400, it is very light, so it belongs in headings and not in paragraphs. No italic or bold exists. The 220 glyphs cover Western European Latin, including the letters for German, French, Spanish and the Nordic languages.

Where Nixie One works

Large editorial headlines
At big sizes the hairline strokes and slab serifs form a light, open texture above darker text.
Titles on dark backgrounds
Rounded, even lines in a bright colour on black echo the neon tubing the design refers to.
Retro-technology themes
The typewriter skeleton suits titles about vintage electronics, archives and office machines.
Big numerals
Thin slab-serif figures work as oversized section numbers, prices or dates.
Wordmarks
A short name in wide, monoline slab letters gives a light, technical signature.

Things to know

Very thin strokes
The single weight is hairline-light and loses contrast at small sizes or on low-resolution screens.
One style
Nixie One has Regular 400 only; there is no bold or italic for emphasis.
Reserved Font Name
The name table reserves the font name Nixie, so a modified version needs another name unless permission is given.
