About Metrophobic

Metrophobic is a sans serif with a semi-geometric construction: its rounds are squared off into broad, flat-sided shapes, and strokes hold nearly the same thickness throughout. The specimen shows wide letters, a large x-height, a double-storey a, a y shaped like a u with a straight tail, a Q whose tail is a short bar beneath the bowl and a capital I with bars at top and bottom. The aim was legibility in small text together with enough personality for headlines, and the designer also allowed for body text. Version 3.100, in June 2019, redrew and respaced the design. Version 3.200, in January 2023, enlarged the glyph set, added Vietnamese and adjusted the horizontal spacing. Vernon Adams drew Metrophobic on commission from Google. There is one Regular style with 591 glyphs, and the license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Metrophobic works

Interface labels and captions
A large x-height and even strokes were intended to keep small text legible.
Headings on technology pages
Squared rounds and the barred capital I give titles a technical, constructed look.
Short body copy
The official description allows for text bodies; with one style, it suits passages that need no bold or italic.
Vietnamese text
The 2023 update added the accented letters needed for Vietnamese.

Fonts that pair with Metrophobic

Alike Serif

Metrophobic is sans serif and Alike is serif (1 weight): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Bevan Slab Serif

Metrophobic is sans serif and Bevan is slab serif (1 weight): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Chivo Mono Monospace

Chivo Mono is a monospace family (9 weights) for code and figures next to Metrophobic as the text face.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

One style
Metrophobic has Regular 400 only. Bold and italic will be synthesised by software if requested.
Wide letters
The letters are broad in the specimen, so a line of Metrophobic holds fewer characters than a typical text sans at the same size.
Reserved name
The license notice lists Metrophobic as a Reserved Font Name.

FAQs

Is Metrophobic free for commercial use?

How many weights does Metrophobic have?

Metrophobic has one weight, Regular 400, with no italic. It is not a variable font.

Is Metrophobic good for body text?
