About Margarine

Margarine is a display typeface that looks written with a broad marker. Strokes are thick and even, their edges waver slightly, and every end is rounded. The official notes describe how round forms are deliberately carried into lowercase characters that are otherwise straightened: bowls and arches stay soft while the stems stand upright. One detail stands out in the specimen: the capital I carries a dot, like an enlarged lowercase i. Capitals are only a little taller than the lowercase, which keeps lines compact. The family has one Regular style and is not a variable font. Its 372 glyphs cover Latin and Latin Extended. Margarine is credited to Astigmatic, with Brian J. Bonislawsky named in the copyright notice, and is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Margarine works

Children's products and books
Thick marker strokes with rounded ends give titles a hand-drawn, approachable look.
Snack and dairy packaging
A product name set large shows the wavering edge that makes the lettering look made by hand.
Comic titles and sound effects
Heavy, soft letters hold their shape inside panels and speech-bubble headings.
Informal signs and notices
Short lines read as if written on a board with a broad marker.
