About Lexend Giga

Lexend Giga is a sans serif typeface with very wide letters and large gaps between them. In the specimen the lowercase alphabet fills the whole line, the round letters o, c and e stretch into broad ovals, and the lowercase a is single-storey. It is part of Lexend, a collection of seven font families developed with the aim of improving reading proficiency through what the project calls the Shaver-Troup Formulations. Like its siblings, Giga is a variable font with one axis, weight, from 100 to 900, which gives nine weights from Thin to Black; the conversion to variable fonts was made in June 2021 with the help of Font Bureau. There is no italic. The single file holds 845 glyphs for Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. Bonnie Shaver-Troup, Thomas Jockin, Santiago Orozco, Héctor Gómez and Superunion are credited as designers.

Where Lexend Giga works

Wide display headings
Broad letters and open spacing spread a two- or three-word title across the full width of a page.
Navigation and section labels
A single word in Medium or SemiBold reads like letterspaced capitals without any manual tracking.
Wordmarks
The stretched ovals of o, c and e give a short brand name a wide, horizontal shape.
Large text for early readers
Widely separated letters keep each character apart in short lines set big.

Lexend Deca Sans Serif

Lexend Deca belongs to the same collection but is far narrower, which makes it the text companion to Lexend Giga headings.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
