About League Gothic

League Gothic is a display typeface of tall, tightly packed letters with heavy, even strokes. The lowercase rises to most of the height of the capitals, counters are narrow slits, and the curves of letters such as O, C and S are flattened into straight sides, so a long headline takes up very little width. The design revives Alternate Gothic: Morris Fuller Benton drew the original in 1903 for American Type Founders, and The League of Moveable Type produced this open-source version. Tyler Finck, Micah Rich, Mirko Velimirovic and Dannci contributed to later revisions. There is one weight, Regular 400, without an italic. The file is a variable font with a width axis from 75 to 100, which squeezes the already narrow letters further. It holds 512 glyphs for Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese, and it was added to Google Fonts in 2021.

Where League Gothic works

Newspaper-style headlines
Tall, narrow letters fit many characters into a column width, as in the 1903 original it revives.
Posters and flyers
Heavy strokes and a high lowercase make a title readable from far away while leaving room for an image.
Video thumbnails and banners
A short phrase in mixed case or capitals fills the height of a banner without running out of width.
Labels and signs
At a width setting of 75 a long word still fits a narrow label or sign panel.
