About Halant

Halant is a serif family that supports two scripts, Devanagari and Latin. The Latin letters in the specimen have moderate contrast, wedge-shaped serifs and compact, sturdy proportions, and the figures are lining. Five static weights are supplied, from Light 300 to Bold 700, and there is no italic. The fonts hold 915 glyphs, far more than the Latin alphabet alone would need. Indian Type Foundry released Halant as an open source family in 2014. Sources differ on the individual designers: the official description credits Vivek Sadamate and Ninad Kale with the Devanagari and Jonny Pinhorn with the Latin, while the name table inside the font names Hitesh Malaviya for Devanagari and Satya Rajpurohit for Latin. The Latin coverage is Western European; the Latin Extended subset is not part of the fonts.

Where Halant works

Pages that mix Devanagari and Latin
Both scripts are drawn in the same five weights, so mixed lines keep an even colour.
Editorial text
Regular and Medium supply a text weight and a slightly darker one for print and screen reading.
Headings and subheads
SemiBold and Bold sharpen the wedge serifs into heads that still match the text weights.
Light introductions and quotes
Light 300 offers a quieter voice for standfirsts and pull quotes set larger than the text.
Western European languages
The Latin part includes the letters for English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and the Nordic languages.

Glyphs

Language support

The family contains the core letters these languages are written with:

  • English
  • French
  • German
  • Spanish
  • Portuguese
  • Italian
  • Dutch
  • Swedish
  • Norwegian
  • Danish
  • Finnish
  • Icelandic
  • Catalan
  • Estonian

Writing systems with glyphs in the family besides Latin: Devanagari. These are listed as scripts, not as a promise for every language written in them.

Character sets found in the files: devanagari, latin. The language list is a check of required letters against the font, not a promise of typographic quality in each language.

Halant is serif and News Cycle is sans serif (2 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Atkinson Hyperlegible Mono Monospace

Atkinson Hyperlegible Mono is a monospace family (7 weights) for code and figures next to Halant as the text face.

Alegreya Sans Sans Serif
