About Gilda Display

Gilda Display is a high-contrast serif with classical proportions. In the specimen, thick vertical stems meet hairline horizontals and thin, sharp serifs through gradual transitions; the capital Q has a long sweeping tail, the y ends in a curled terminal, and the numerals carry the same contrast as the letters. The family is one Regular style at weight 400, without italic or bold, and it is not a variable font. Its 440 glyphs cover Latin and Latin Extended; the official notes say the glyph set was completed in January 2023, which widened language coverage. Eduardo Tunni designed the typeface, and the same notes associate it with fashion, jewellery and luxury goods and with headlines in particular, while allowing for longer passages. Gilda Display is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, with Gilda as a Reserved Font Name.

Where Gilda Display works

Fashion and jewellery headlines
Hairline serifs and strong thick-thin contrast show to advantage in large titles, the use the designer names first.
Magazine covers and section openers
Classical capitals and the long-tailed Q give a masthead or opener a formal, bookish tone.
Boutique and hotel branding
A single refined Regular sets a name and a short strapline on signage, cards and menus.
Short introductions and pull quotes
The official notes allow for longer passages, so a paragraph or two at generous size remains readable.

Things to know

One style
Gilda Display has only Regular 400. There is no italic and no bold, so emphasis has to come from size, colour or a second family.
Hairlines need size
The thin strokes visible in the specimen are a fraction of the stem width; at small sizes or on low-resolution output they become faint.
Reserved Font Name
The license notice reserves the name Gilda, so a modified version must be released under a different name.
