About Fahkwang

Fahkwang is a sans serif family for Thai and Latin whose strokes swing clearly between thick and thin, a trait more usual in serif type. In the specimen the Latin letters are wide, with broad round bowls and thin joins where curves meet stems, and the contrast becomes stronger as the weight increases. The official notes trace the idea to the headlines of old Thai newspapers. Six weights run from ExtraLight 200 to Bold 700, each with an italic, which makes 12 styles; the family is not a variable font. Its 775 glyphs cover Thai as well as the Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese character sets. Cadson Demak is credited as designer, the font's name table names Suppakit Chalermlarp of Katatrad, and the copyright notice names The Fahkwang Project Authors. Fahkwang is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Fahkwang works

Thai and Latin headlines
The design goes back to Thai newspaper headlines, and both scripts share the same thick-and-thin stroke pattern.
Magazine layouts
ExtraLight for large titles and Medium for decks show the contrast at different strengths within one family.
Hospitality and fashion branding
Wide letters with fine joins give a name on a menu, tag or shopfront a refined line without serifs.
Banners and wide formats
Broad proportions fill a horizontal space with few words, and the italics add a second voice.

Glyphs
