About Brygada 1918

Brygada 1918 is a serif typeface revived from Polish metal type. According to its official notes, the project marked one hundred years of Polish independence in 2018 and draws on two sources: an entry in the 1954 catalogue of the National Type Foundry and matrices found in 2016 at the Book Arts Museum. In the specimen the letters show clear contrast between thick and thin strokes, bracketed serifs, ball terminals on a, r and y, and a two-storey g; the figures stand at capital height. The family is a variable font with a weight axis from 400 to 700, named Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold, and a separate italic file, eight styles altogether. Its 1,466 glyphs cover Latin, Latin Extended, Vietnamese, Cyrillic and Greek. The credits list Capitalics, Mateusz Machalski, Borys Kosmynka, Ania Wieluńska and Przemysław Hoffer.

Where Brygada 1918 works

Books and long-form text
Regular and Medium with their italics give a text weight, a slightly darker alternative and emphasis within one design.
Polish and Central European publishing
The character set includes the letters for Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian and Romanian, in keeping with the typeface's Polish origin.
Editions in more than one script
Cyrillic and Greek sit beside Latin in the same fonts, so a bilingual page does not need a second family.
Magazine headings and pull quotes
SemiBold and Bold enlarge the ball terminals and stroke contrast that are easy to miss at text size.
Commemorative and museum print
A face revived from a 1954 foundry catalogue fits exhibition captions, anniversaries and heritage publications.
