About Allerta Stencil

Allerta Stencil is a display typeface in which letters are interrupted by narrow gaps, as if sprayed through a stencil plate. Beneath the breaks is a sturdy sans serif with fairly heavy strokes and open shapes. In the specimen the gaps appear where bowls meet stems in letters like a, b, d and p, across the crossbar of A, and through S, 0, 6, 8 and 9, while straight letters such as E, H and L stay whole. The official notes explain that Allerta was first developed for signage, to be read quickly and from far away, with every glyph shaped so it is hard to confuse with another. Matt McInerney designed it. The family has one Regular style, without italic or bold. Its 188 glyphs cover basic Latin; French is complete except for the æ and œ ligatures, and there are no curly braces.

Where Allerta Stencil works

Signs and wayfinding
The underlying letterforms were drawn to be told apart at a distance, and the stencil cuts add an industrial accent.
Crate-style labels and packaging
Stencil breaks suggest lettering sprayed on boxes, sacks and containers.
Poster and flyer headlines
A single sturdy weight holds up at large sizes, where the cuts in each letter become the main feature.
Short wordmarks
A one-word name in Allerta Stencil has enough built-in detail to stand without extra graphics.
Section titles on websites
Used sparingly above a plain text face, it marks section starts in Western European languages.
