Eager Eve: An 18 ft Cabin Cruiser for Weekend Trips

William D. Jackson's 18 ft Eager Eve sleeps two, seats four and cruises at 22 mph on a 25 hp outboard.

Eager Eve is the kind of small cruiser that turns a day out into a weekend away. William D. Jackson drew it at 18 ft (5.5 m) with a 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) beam. It sleeps two and seats four, so you can bring friends for the day. With an Evinrude 25 hp Big Twin or Johnson, it cruises at 22 mph and tops out around 30 mph with 33 hp. The plywood hull has a vee-convex bottom.

Small cruiser, big plans

Sleeping two and seating four, Eager Eve suits couples who want overnight trips and the occasional day out with friends. The 6 ft 1 in (1.85 m) beam gives a stable feel at anchor. A vee-convex bottom using developable surfaces lets 3/8 in. plywood bend naturally into shape, which makes construction more manageable. Ten sheets cover the hull and cabin.

Who designed it

William D. Jackson drew Eager Eve for the Boat Builder's Handbook, page 75, as Craft Print 175. The ten sheets cover the vee-convex bottom, plywood planking and cabin. It is a compact, practical weekender.

Before you build

  • Ventilate the cabin well and fit screened openings to keep air moving overnight.
  • Stay close to the 25 to 33 hp outboard range the speeds are based on.
  • Carry anchor, lights and safety gear, as a cabin cruiser invites longer trips.
