Pod: A 15 ft Frameless Boat Plan From Three Plywood Pieces

Gordon L. Hansen's 15 ft 5 in boat made from three pieces of marine plywood with no frames required.

Pod takes minimalism seriously. This 15 ft 5 in (4.7 m) boat, 11 ft 6 in (3.51 m) on the waterline with a 52 in (1.32 m) beam, is built from just three pieces of marine plywood for the sides and bottom. No frames are required, though optional frames are shown for builders who want them. It is a clever design from Mechanix Illustrated for anyone who loves the idea of a sizeable hull from a remarkably short parts list.

Three pieces, one hull

Using just three pieces of plywood for sides and bottom means very few seams to seal and very little cutting. Without frames, the panels themselves create the shape and stiffness, which keeps the interior open and the weight low for a boat of this length.

The optional frames are a thoughtful addition, giving builders a choice between the leanest possible hull and a stiffer, more traditional structure. The long overhangs, shown by the difference between overall and waterline length, give Pod a sleek, distinctive profile on the water. It is a design that rewards careful, patient panel work.

Who designed it

Gordon L. Hansen designed Pod for Mechanix Illustrated, where it appeared on page 140. The plan's frameless approach, with optional frames shown, gives builders flexibility in how they put the hull together.

Before you build

  • Decide early whether to use the optional frames, since it changes how you assemble and stiffen the panels.
  • Join the three plywood pieces with careful glue and fiberglass tape so the seams stay watertight.
  • Add buoyancy in the ends or under any seats, because a light frameless hull needs built-in flotation.
