How to Understand a Boat Plan: A Free 1954 Weston Farmer Guide

Weston Farmer's 1954 guide to reading boat plans, from the Sports Afield Boatbuilding Annual.

Boat plans can look like a puzzle of curves, numbers and views. In How to Understand a Boat Plan, Weston Farmer set out to make them readable for the home builder. It appeared in the 1954 Sports Afield Boatbuilding Annual and runs across five sheets. If you have ever stared at a set of lines and wondered where to begin, this is the place to start.

Why it is worth reading first

Every plan in this collection assumes you can read its drawings. Learning how the different views relate to each other makes the difference between confident building and expensive guesswork. Once you can see how the profile, plan and sections fit together, the drawings start to read like a map rather than a mystery.

Coming from a designer who drew many plans himself, the guide explains things from the drawing board outward. Five sheets make it a short, practical read before any project. It is a brief read with a lasting payoff, and it pairs well with any plan you are considering building.

Before you build

  • Read this guide with a real plan open beside you so you can match each idea to an actual drawing.

  • Try it alongside one of Farmer's own plans from the same 1954 annual, such as Binky or Jennie.
