About Vollkorn

Vollkorn is a serif family for everyday text. Its name is German for wholemeal, a nod to the old printers' term for the small sizes used for daily reading. The specimen shows why it looks darker than many book faces: serifs are thick and wedge-like, stems are solid, curves swell gently, and the default figures are old-style, rising and falling with the lowercase. Friedrich Althausen made it as his first typeface and published it in 2005 under a Creative Commons license; in May 2020 it was rebuilt as a variable family, roman and italic each with a weight axis. The family has six weights from Regular to Black with italics, 12 styles, on an axis from 400 to 900. Its 2,283 glyphs cover Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and Vietnamese. Vollkorn is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Vollkorn works

Books and long articles
Solid serifs and stems keep the page evenly dark, and old-style figures blend into running text.
Essays and blogs on the web
Two variable files deliver all 12 styles, so body, emphasis and headings load together.
Heavy serif headlines
ExtraBold 800 and Black 900 give titles real mass while staying in the text family.
Printed reports on plain paper
Thick serifs survive office printers and photocopying where finer faces break up.
Multilingual editions
Cyrillic and Greek alphabets let Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian or Greek texts share the design.

Fonts that pair with Vollkorn

Alata Sans Serif

Geist Mono Monospace

Geist Mono is a monospace family (9 weights) for code and figures next to Vollkorn as the text face.

Albert Sans Sans Serif

Vollkorn is serif and Albert Sans is sans serif (9 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.
