Syne Mono

A fixed-width face made by running Syne Regular through a tool that swaps its curve points, leaving bent, chamfered letters.

Monospace 1 style by Bonjour Monde, Lucas Descroix OFL

Syne Mono is a monospaced typeface from Bonjour Monde and Lucas Descroix. It started as Syne Regular and was processed by Bonjour Monde's DataFace tool, which exchanges on-curve and off-curve points, so bowls turn angular and stems swell. Syne Mono has one Regular style with 603 glyphs under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

About Syne Mono

Syne Mono is a monospaced typeface in which every character occupies the same width, yet the outlines look deliberately disturbed. The official notes explain why: the design began as Syne Regular and was passed through DataFace, a tool by Bonjour Monde that turns on-curve points into off-curve points and the reverse. In the specimen the effect is plain to see. Round letters such as o, a and e get chamfered, almost octagonal bowls, while straight stems in M, y and A bulge and pinch as if drawn with a swelling brush. The wider Syne family was designed in 2017 for the art centre Synesthésie in Saint-Denis, near Paris; it was conceived by Bonjour Monde and drawn by Lucas Descroix with help from Arman Mohtadji. Syne Mono comes as one Regular style with 603 glyphs for Latin and Latin Extended, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Syne Mono works

Art and culture posters
The family was made for an art centre, and the chamfered bowls and swelling stems give a title an experimental, processed look.
Titles for generative or glitch work
The letters are themselves the output of an automated point-swapping tool, which suits projects about code-made imagery.
Tabular display settings
Fixed character widths let short labels, dates and numbers stack in columns on a programme or schedule.
Contrast with Syne
Set beside Syne, its parent design, Syne Mono marks captions, tags or metadata as a distinct voice within one family.

Fonts that pair with Syne Mono

Syne Sans Serif

Syne Mono was generated from Syne Regular, so Syne supplies the undistorted proportional companion for headings and text.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

Monospaced, but not a coding face
Widths are fixed, yet the outlines are distorted on purpose. The irregular stems make long passages and small sizes harder to read.
One style
Syne Mono has Regular 400 only, with no bold or italic.
Part of a three-member family
The official notes list Syne and Syne Tactile as the other members.

FAQs

Is Syne Mono free for commercial use?

Yes. Syne Mono is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits personal and commercial use, modification and redistribution. It may not be sold by itself, and a modified version has to keep the same license.

Who designed Syne Mono?

Syne Mono is credited to Bonjour Monde and Lucas Descroix. The official notes add that Arman Mohtadji helped with the Syne family.

Why do the letters of Syne Mono look distorted?

Syne Mono was produced by running Syne Regular through Bonjour Monde's DataFace tool, which swaps on-curve and off-curve points. The swap bends stems and flattens curves.

Is Syne Mono good for programming?

Syne Mono is monospaced, so columns align, but its outlines are intentionally irregular. It is better kept for titles and short labels than for an editor.

How many weights does Syne Mono have?

Syne Mono has one weight, Regular 400.
