About Staatliches

Staatliches is a display sans serif made of capital letters only: in the specimen the lowercase row shows the same capitals as the row above it. The letters are narrow and heavy, with strokes of even thickness, flat stroke ends and tight curves on C, G, O and S. Brian LaRossa and Erica Carras drew the alphabet as a response to Herbert Bayer's title lettering for the catalogue of the first Bauhaus exhibition, published in 1923; the font's name table lists Type Brut Foundry as manufacturer. The one Regular file holds 418 glyphs: capitals, figures, punctuation and symbols, alternate letter widths, discretionary ligatures and accented Latin letters. Staatliches is not a variable font and has no italic. It was added to Google Fonts in 2018 and is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Staatliches works

Exhibition and event posters
Narrow, heavy capitals fit a long title on one line, and the Bauhaus-catalogue origin suits art, design and architecture subjects.
Wordmarks and labels
Alternate letter widths and discretionary ligatures give a short name several possible shapes without redrawing letters.
Section titles on websites
A single 400 file keeps the page light while the dense capitals mark the top of a section.
Packaging and stickers
Even stroke thickness and closed, compact shapes hold up when a line is printed small or reversed out of a colour.
Titles in European languages
Accented capitals are included for languages such as German, Polish, Czech and Turkish, so translated headings keep the same look.
