About Signika

Signika is a sans serif family developed for wayfinding and signage. Its strokes vary little in thickness and the lowercase is tall, two choices the official notes connect with reading small text and reading from far away. In the specimen the stroke ends are cut at a slight angle, the l ends in a tail, and the a and g keep open, distinct shapes, which gives the face a gentle tone. The figures are designed as tabular. Signika is a variable font with two axes: weight, from 300 to 700, and Grade, from -30 to 0, added in July 2023 to deal with the optical effects of negative text setting. Named weights are Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold; there are no italics. The font contains 1,414 glyphs for Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese. Anna Giedryś is the designer.

Where Signika works

Wayfinding and signs
Low contrast and a tall lowercase were chosen for legibility at a distance, the conditions of corridor, station and campus signs.
Interface text
The same properties serve small labels, and the Grade axis fine-tunes stroke thickness without changing line lengths in a layout.
Information graphics
Tabular figures align in charts, timetables and price lists.
Maps and floor plans
The tailed l and clear a and g help separate similar shapes in small place names and room labels.
Public information leaflets
Light to Bold covers body text, subheads and warnings in forms, leaflets and notices.

Things to know

Grade axis from -30 to 0
Grade is a second variable axis. The default is 0, and negative values make the strokes slightly thinner.
No italics
Signika has five upright weights and no italic styles.
The default instance is Light
The weight axis defaults to 300, so set the weight explicitly where software does not read the named instances.
