About Saira

Saira is a sans serif type system whose curves are drawn as rounded rectangles: the bowls of o, d and p have straight sides, and the stroke ends are cut flat. This is the normal-width family of the system. According to the official notes it was rebuilt in 2020 as a variable font with two axes, weight from 100 to 900 and width from 50 to 125, so one file reaches from narrow settings to expanded ones wider than the default of 100. Roman and italic each have nine named weights, Thin to Black, which gives 18 styles. The fonts hold 893 glyphs across the Latin, Latin Extended and Vietnamese character sets. Hector Gatti designed Saira and the Omnibus-Type team developed it. The fonts are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Saira works

Responsive headlines
The width axis from 50 to 125 lets a headline be narrowed on a phone and widened on a desktop screen without changing family.
Product interfaces
Squared counters and flat stroke ends hold their shape in small labels, while Medium and SemiBold mark the hierarchy.
Technology and motorsport branding
Flat-sided curves set in Black at an expanded width give a wordmark an engineered, mechanical character.
Emphasis in running text
Italics exist for every weight from Thin to Black, so captions and paragraphs can carry emphasis inside the same family.
Multilingual product pages
Latin Extended and Vietnamese character sets cover language versions from Portuguese to Polish and Vietnamese.

Things to know

The default instance is Thin
The weight axis defaults to 100. Software that ignores the named instances shows Thin, so set the weight explicitly, for example font-weight: 400.
Two axes in two files
The download holds one variable file for the roman and one for the italic. Each contains both the weight axis and the width axis.
Width 100 is the normal width
Values below 100 narrow the letters down to 50, and values above it expand them up to 125.
