About Philosopher

Philosopher is a sans serif typeface whose strokes swell and flare at the ends, so that several letters carry small spur-like finishes where a serif would sit. Thick verticals and thinner curves give it more contrast than most sans serifs, and capitals such as M, N and U are drawn with slender, slightly curved strokes. The family has four styles: Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic. Jovanny Lemonad began the project in 2008 and intended it for logos, headlines and text alike. The official notes say the first version was released with deliberate errors that were corrected later, that the four-style family appeared in June 2011, and that the Latin and Cyrillic fonts were fully hinted in September 2011. The fonts hold 553 glyphs across Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese subsets under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Philosopher works

Wordmarks and logos
Flared stroke ends and slender capitals give a company name a drawn, individual character without adding full serifs.
Headlines in Russian and English
Latin and Cyrillic are both in the fonts, so a bilingual title uses matching letterforms.
Book covers and cultural posters
The contrast between thick and thin strokes shows clearly when Philosopher is set large.
Short articles and introductions
Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic cover text, emphasis and subheadings within one family.

Fonts that pair with Philosopher

Amiri Serif

Philosopher is sans serif and Amiri is serif (2 weights): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

Antic Slab Slab Serif

Philosopher is sans serif and Antic Slab is slab serif (1 weight): the difference in structure separates headings from text.

DM Mono Monospace

DM Mono is a monospace family (3 weights) for code and figures next to Philosopher as the text face.

Suggestions come from simple rules on the records: a contrasting classification and enough weights to carry body text. They are a starting point, not a verdict.

Things to know

Four static styles
Philosopher has Regular 400 and Bold 700, each with an italic. There are no intermediate weights and no variable version in the package.
Not a plain grotesque
Stroke ends flare and some letters have spur-like finishes, so the face sits between a sans serif and a serif in appearance.
Central European coverage is partial
Turkish, Vietnamese, Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian are among the checked languages; Polish, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian are not.
