About Onest

Onest is a sans serif family that mixes the round, constructed shapes of a geometric grotesque with the more open forms of a humanist one. In the specimen the O is nearly circular, the lowercase is tall and wide, and stroke endings are cut horizontally. The official notes recommend it for apps and websites and for long texts on any device, and say the letters remain distinguishable at small sizes for interface elements and navigation. They also mention alternate characters with closed and semi-closed apertures and careful drawing of diacritics such as the cedilla and ogonek. Onest is a variable font with one axis, weight, from 100 to 900, and nine named weights; it has no italic. The file holds 852 glyphs with Latin, Latin Extended, Cyrillic and Vietnamese subsets. Onest was added to Google Fonts in 2023.

Where Onest works

Navigation and interface elements
The official notes point to small-size legibility, and nine weights give labels, tabs and buttons a clear hierarchy.
Long text in apps
A tall, wide lowercase and open shapes were intended for extended reading on screens.
Bilingual Latin and Cyrillic products
Both scripts sit in one variable file, which suits services published in English and Russian or Ukrainian.
Brand typography with alternates
Alternate characters with different apertures let a wordmark or headline shift tone while staying in the family.
Polish, Lithuanian and Romanian text
Diacritics such as the ogonek and cedilla received specific attention in the design.
