About IM Fell DW Pica

IM Fell DW Pica is a serif typeface that reproduces one of the Fell Types in digital form. The official notes trace the source: John Fell, who was Dean of Christ Church and Bishop of Oxford, spent years equipping a learned press at Oxford with types bought in France, Holland and Germany and cut locally by his type-founder Peter De Walpergen, and in 1686 bequeathed the whole collection to the University. Igino Marini's digitisation does not smooth that history away. In the specimen every outline is slightly ragged, as if inked and pressed into paper; stems wobble, serifs are blunt, and the numerals are old-style figures that rise and dip around the x-height. The Q carries a long sweeping tail. The family holds a Regular and an Italic, with 384 glyphs for Latin text, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where IM Fell DW Pica works

Period book and pamphlet design
The outlines keep the worn look of seventeenth-century printing, which suits facsimile-style title pages and chapter openings.
Historical and literary headings
Blunt serifs and a long-tailed Q give a heading for a history essay or classic text an antique voice.
Game and fantasy documents
Uneven stems and old-style figures make in-world letters, maps and handouts look printed long ago.
Quotations with italic emphasis
A true Italic sits beside the Regular, so titles and emphasised words can be set within the same family.
