About Germania One

Germania One is a display typeface that crosses fraktur with geometric sans serif construction. Its designer, John Vargas Beltrán, describes it as a mix of two historical German ideas, meant to look modern and old at once. In the specimen the strokes are heavy and upright and the capitals keep a plain sans skeleton, but the top of A rises to a pointed arch, the bowls of O and D are cut to points, lowercase stems end in slanted cuts and the dot on i and j is a diamond. The letters are fairly narrow. Germania One is one static Regular file with 275 glyphs in a Latin character set, which includes the letters for English, German, Spanish, Italian and the Nordic languages. There is no italic, second weight or variable version.

Where Germania One works

Beer labels and menus
Fraktur traits on a sans skeleton give labels and menu titles a German accent while staying readable.
Event and festival posters
Heavy strokes and pointed arches make a short title stand out at poster size.
Logos and badges
The diamond dot and pointed O give a short name a distinct outline in one colour.
Game and album titles
The mix of old and modern forms suits titles that want a gothic tone without full blackletter.
