About Commissioner

Commissioner is a humanist sans serif of low contrast that Kostas Bartsokas planned from the start as a variable family with three voices. The default voice is a grotesque with straight stems. Raising the Flare axis, from 0 to 100, swells the stroke endings until they resemble glyphic serifs; raising Volume, also 0 to 100, sharpens those endings into wedges. A slant axis from -12 to 0 provides the italic angle, and weight runs from 100 to 900 in nine named steps, Thin to Black. In the specimen the default drawing has wide, open capitals, a double-storey a, and hairline strokes at the Thin end that thicken into a dense Black. All four axes live in one file of 1,113 glyphs covering Latin, extended Latin, Cyrillic, Greek and Vietnamese. Commissioner was added to Google Fonts in 2020 and is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Commissioner works

Product and marketing from one file
The plain default voice serves interface text, while a raised Flare value gives campaign headlines a different texture in the same family.
Editorial headlines
Flare and Volume turn the stroke endings into flared or wedge-shaped serifs at large sizes.
Text in Greek and Cyrillic
Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese subsets respond to all four axes alike.
Emphasis without a second file
The slant axis, from -12 to 0, produces the italic inside the same variable font.
Brand type with a tunable voice
Fixed values of Flare and Volume can be chosen once and used as a house style.

Things to know

The default instance is Thin
The weight axis defaults to 100, so a page that does not set a weight shows hairline text.
Flare and Volume are custom axes
Their tags are FLAR and VOLM; on the web they are set with font-variation-settings.
No separate italic file
Italics come from the slant axis in the single variable file.
