About Caveat

Caveat is a handwriting family whose letters look written quickly with a felt pen: forward-leaning strokes of even thickness, narrow capitals, mostly unjoined lowercase and a small x-height under tall ascenders. The official notes say OpenType features substitute slightly different shapes depending on where a letter falls in a word, which breaks up the repetition that gives typed handwriting away. Pablo Impallari designed it, and Google commissioned the project from Impallari Type, a foundry in Rosario, Argentina. The family is a variable font with a weight axis from 400 to 700, named Regular, Medium, SemiBold and Bold; it has no italic. Its 1,011 glyphs include Latin, extended Latin and Cyrillic, and the extended Cyrillic came from Cyreal in the June 2019 update. A sister family, Caveat Brush, offers a different texture. Caveat is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Where Caveat works

Annotations on diagrams and screenshots
The family was designed with short notes in mind, and its pen-like line separates a comment from the material it comments on.
Handwritten asides in slides
Four weights let a note stay legible on a projector: SemiBold or Bold holds up where Regular would thin out.
Quotes for social graphics
Position-dependent letter variants keep a repeated letter from looking stamped in a short phrase.
Notes in Russian, Ukrainian or Bulgarian
The Cyrillic subset gives handwritten captions in those languages the same hand as the Latin.
Short personal letters
The official notes also name body text as a use, so a paragraph or two of a card or letter is within its range.
