Boating Projects and Tips: A 1972 Bundle of Practical Builds
A 1972 collection of small boating projects, from a tire-and-plywood mooring buoy to a swim ladder and outboard test tank.
Not every useful project is a whole boat. This 1972 collection gathers small builds that make boating easier: a mooring buoy made from a tire and plywood, an outboard motor bracket for canoes, a 50-gallon-drum test tank for running outboards, a transom bracket and a swim ladder, among other handy ideas. It is perfect for rainy weekends and for owners who like improving their gear as much as using it.

Handy upgrades
Each project tackles a common need, from mooring and motor mounting to engine testing and getting back aboard after a swim. They use everyday materials like tires, plywood and steel drums. Because the projects are small, you can tackle them one at a time. Five sheets cover the full set of tips and builds.
The original plan sheets
These are the 5 original sheets from 1972, scanned from the magazine. For building, use the full-size PDF in the download section below.

Before you build
- Clean and secure the 50-gallon drum before using it as a test tank, and run engines only outdoors.
- Test the swim ladder's mounting with plenty of weight before relying on it in deep water.
- Check mooring buoy chain and shackles each season, as they wear faster than you might expect.
