Battle of the Surf Boards: A Plywood Paddleboard Plan
An 8 ft plywood paddleboard from a single panel, plus a rain-spout water gun with a rubber-band plunger for splash battles.
Battle of the Surf Boards is summer silliness at its finest. This Mechanix Illustrated project gives you an 8 ft by 2 ft (2.44 x 0.61 m) paddleboard made from a single 4 x 8 ft panel of 1/4 in waterproof plywood, plus a water gun built from a rain spout with a rubber-band plunger. Build two boards, arm both riders and let the splashing begin. It is a quick, cheerful weekend project for families with a lake, pool or calm beach nearby.

Made for splashing
One sheet of plywood per board keeps the cost and build time tiny, so making a pair for a friendly battle is perfectly realistic. The 2 ft width gives enough stability for kneeling or lying on the board while paddling around. Light and flat, each board is easy for a child to carry down to the water.
The rain-spout water gun adds a playful twist that turns a simple board into a game. It uses everyday hardware-store materials and a rubber band, which makes it a great hands-on project to build alongside children before taking it out for a summer afternoon. Expect plenty of laughter, and expect everyone to end up soaked.

Who designed it
Hi Sibley designed Battle of the Surf Boards for Mechanix Illustrated. The project pairs a basic plywood paddleboard with a homemade water gun, aimed at families looking for a quick and entertaining build.
Before you build
- Seal every edge of the 1/4 in plywood thoroughly, since paddleboards spend their whole life soaked.
- Use the boards in calm, shallow water where children can stand up easily if they fall off.
- Round over all corners and edges smoothly so knees and elbows stay scrape-free during battles.
