## About Zen Dots

Zen Dots is a display sans serif with very wide, heavy letters made of flat horizontals and rounded-rectangle bowls. The lowercase is almost as tall as the capitals, counters are narrow slots, and several glyphs have a futuristic twist in the specimen: the capital O has a bar across its middle, the zero is slashed and the G carries a long inner bar. The official notes say its futuristic look takes cues from science-fiction films of several eras, and that it is one of three Latin fonts by Yoshimichi Ohira in the Zen Fonts collection. The family has a single Regular style and is not a variable font. It holds 256 glyphs in the basic Latin subset and is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Game and esports titles**: Extended, heavy letters fill a banner or splash screen with a short name.
- **Technology and automotive logos**: The barred O and squared bowls give a wordmark a dashboard-display character.
- **Sci-fi film and book graphics**: The design takes its cues from science-fiction cinema, so it fits title cards and cover lines in that genre.
- **Product codes and model numbers**: The slashed zero separates 0 from the barred O when letters and digits are mixed.

## Things to know

- **Very wide**: Each letter takes a lot of horizontal room; long words need a small size or several lines.
- **The capital O has a bar**: In all-caps settings the barred O can be read as another character, so check words that contain it.
- **One style, basic Latin**: Zen Dots has Regular 400 only and lists just the Latin subset, with 256 glyphs.
