## About UnifrakturCook

UnifrakturCook is a blackletter typeface with thick, broken strokes and diamond-shaped terminals. The specimen shows dense lowercase letters built from angled pen cuts and broad, ornate capitals with split stems and curled hairlines. According to the official notes, the letter shapes were taken almost unchanged from a font by Peter Wiegel, which goes back to a typeface Rudolf Koch drew in 1910; what j. 'mach' wust added is font technology. Ligatures appear automatically through OpenType, Apple Advanced Typography and SIL Graphite, and the font separates required ligatures such as ch, ck and tz, which stay joined when letterspacing is widened, from ordinary ones such as fi and fl, which split apart. The family has one style, Bold, with 249 glyphs, and was prepared for @font-face use on websites.

## Where it works

- **Mastheads and titles**: Heavy broken strokes and ornate capitals give a newspaper-style nameplate or a title its weight.
- **German blackletter setting on the web**: Required ligatures such as ch, ck and tz are kept even in letterspaced text, following blackletter convention.
- **Beer labels and tavern signs**: The dense, dark letters hold up on labels, coasters and signboards at display size.
- **Certificates and festive headings**: One line in the ornate capitals and lowercase adds ceremony above plainer text.
- **Band and event logos**: A short name in blackletter reads as a mark, and the automatic ligatures tidy pairs such as ch and tz.

## Things to know

- **Bold is the only weight**: The single style is registered as Bold 700; there is no regular or light version.
- **Suppressing a ligature**: The official notes say to put a zero width non-joiner between two letters, for example between t and z in a compound word, when a ligature should not form.
- **Capitals are not for all-caps setting**: The ornate capitals are drawn to begin words; a line of them is hard to read, as the specimen's capital row shows.

## FAQs

### Is UnifrakturCook free for commercial use?

Yes. UnifrakturCook is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, so it can be used in personal and commercial projects, modified and redistributed. The fonts cannot be sold on their own, and a modified version keeps the same license and may not use a Reserved Font Name without permission.

### Who designed UnifrakturCook?

UnifrakturCook was produced by j. 'mach' wust on the basis of a font by Peter Wiegel, itself derived from a typeface Rudolf Koch drew in 1910. Both wust and Wiegel appear in the copyright notice.

### How many weights does UnifrakturCook have?

UnifrakturCook has one weight, Bold 700, in a single upright style. It is not a variable font.

### How do ligatures work in UnifrakturCook?

UnifrakturCook replaces sequences such as tz or ch with ligatures automatically. A zero width non-joiner typed between the two letters prevents a ligature where it would be wrong.

### Which languages does UnifrakturCook support?

UnifrakturCook includes the letters needed for German, English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch, the Nordic languages, Catalan and Estonian.
