## About Tiro Devanagari Hindi

Tiro Devanagari Hindi is a book typeface for Devanagari that carries its own Latin. The official notes trace it to a face made for the Murty Classical Library of India series and describe the Devanagari as a present-day reading of nineteenth- and twentieth-century metal types such as those of the Nirnaya Sagar Press, with broader proportions, roomier counters and strong diagonal strokes. In this Hindi version the conjuncts mix traditional and modern forms. The Latin shown in the specimen is a sturdy serif with moderate contrast and bracketed serifs, and it includes diacritics for transcribing Indian languages. The open-license release added characters and a new italic. There are two static files, Regular and Italic, with 1,388 glyphs. John Hudson and Fiona Ross designed the Devanagari, Hudson the Latin, and Paul Hanslow adapted the italic. The license is the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Literary and classical editions**: The design descends from a face made for a classical library series, and its proportions follow traditional metal types for book text.
- **Devanagari with romanised terms**: The built-in Latin has transcription diacritics, so a transliterated word matches the Devanagari beside it in weight and style.
- **Long reading on screen**: The official notes say the design was made with screen media in mind as well as print; its counters are roomy and its proportions broad.
- **Emphasis and titles of works**: The Italic gives a second voice for emphasis, which a single-style Devanagari font cannot offer.

## Things to know

- **One weight**: The family has Regular and Italic and no bold.
- **Conjuncts tuned for Hindi**: This version balances traditional and modern conjunct forms, as the official notes put it.
- **The Latin is a subset**: The Latin part covers Western European languages and transcription diacritics. It is not listed under Latin Extended.
