## About Secular One

Secular One is a sans serif typeface that pairs a Hebrew alphabet with a Latin one in the same humanist style. The official notes explain that when it appeared in 2016 few Hebrew sans serif text faces existed, and that Michal Sahar aimed for a design that is simple without being neutral, readable in small sizes and long paragraphs, and more eccentric when enlarged. Some of that shows in the Latin specimen: strokes are dark and gently modulated, the a is single-storey, and terminals are cut at an angle. There is a single style, named Regular though drawn noticeably dark, and no italic. A June 2023 update enlarged the glyph set, which now stands at 466 glyphs for Hebrew, Latin and Latin Extended. The project is led by Michal Sahar in Tel Aviv, and the font is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

## Where it works

- **Hebrew and English headings**: Both scripts were drawn together in one weight, so a bilingual title keeps an even colour across the line.
- **Brand identities**: The official notes point to branding: at large sizes the single-storey a and angled terminals give a name character.
- **Buttons and short interface text**: The dark single weight keeps labels visible without needing a bold.
- **Intro paragraphs**: The design was meant to stay readable in paragraphs, which suits a short lead-in above text set in a lighter family.

## Things to know

- **One weight only**: Secular One has no bold or italic, so emphasis cannot come from a heavier cut of the same family.
- **Hebrew script included**: The font carries a Hebrew character set beside Latin and Latin Extended.
- **No Cyrillic, Greek or Vietnamese**: Those character sets are not part of Secular One.
