## About Scheherazade New

Scheherazade New is an Arabic-script typeface in the traditional Naskh style. Its makers state that it supports every Arabic script character in Unicode 14.0, which reaches well beyond the Arabic language to the extended letters other languages add to the script. The name comes from the storyteller heroine of the Arabian Nights. Four static weights are available, Regular 400, Medium 500, SemiBold 600 and Bold 700; Medium and SemiBold arrived with an update dated April 2023, after a May 2022 revision that enlarged the glyph set. The fonts hold 1,822 glyphs. The Latin letters, shown in the specimen, are a conventional bookish serif with bracketed serifs and moderate contrast, covering English and Western European languages. SIL developed the family and publishes it under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, reserving the names Scheherazade and SIL.

## Where it works

- **Books and long text in Arabic script**: Four weights of a traditional Naskh give body text, emphasis and headings without leaving the style.
- **Languages with extended Arabic letters**: Coverage of the Unicode 14.0 Arabic repertoire includes the additional letters used outside the Arabic language.
- **Scholarly and reference publishing**: A full character repertoire reduces fallback to other fonts when rare letters or marks appear in citations.
- **Bilingual documents**: The built-in Latin serif lets English or French notes sit beside Arabic-script text without a second family.

## Things to know

- **Latin coverage is basic**: The Latin part has no Latin Extended subset; Turkish, Polish and other Central European languages are not among those with complete letters.
- **No italic or slanted style**: The four styles differ in weight only, from Regular to Bold.
- **Static files**: Each weight is a separate file, and the family is not a variable font.
